Art and Design Department

The Art Department at Ysgol Dyffryn Aman is a dynamic and stimulating environment where pupils learn a broad and varied curriculum. High achievement is encourages through an engaging programme of high quality teaching and learning. We expect all students to do their very best as they explore, develop and refine new skills, ideas and experiences.

Learners receive high level of individually tailored support form a skilled team of 4 teachers, support staff and professional practitioners. Students are given the opportunity to express themselves creatively through independent learning, practical application , teamwork and reflection.We also prepare our pupils for the future by addressing issues relevant to their personal, social and moral development. All teachers have a variety and diverse skill set to offer, such as painting/drawing, graphics, photography, textiles and sculpture.

There is a strong ethos of self expression and creativity in all classrooms and teaching. Pupils are encouraged to be independent and self motivated. Imagination and ‘thinking outside the box’ are promoted and encouraged. The classroom environment is nurturing and stimulating, (as indeed are the linking corridors and entrance into the department).

Programme of study outline at KS3

At KS3, our aim is to provide pupils with the basic principles and creative skills necessary to prepare them for KS4 and beyond.

Pupils receive 1 lesson of Art per week, and are taught in both Welsh and English.

Programme of study outline at KS4 GCSE WJEC Art & Design & Photography

Building of the knowledge acquired at KS3, our aim at KS4 is to provide pupils with a broad and rich experience of Art & Design which develops a multitude of practical skills as well as raising their self-esteem and confidence; nurturing their wellbeing.

Pupils receive 5 lesson of Art per fortnight.

Portfolio – Coursework  60%

A skills based approach is undertaken in the first 2 terms of year 10. Pupils learn about the elements of Art and Design, mark- making and experiment with a variety processes, materials and techniques. Pupils also engage in artist research and investigation, further consolidating their understanding of the creative process. A personal portfolio, (theme of their choice) commences in the third term of year 10 and into year 11. Pupils then utilise the skills previously learnt and develop their work further by using imagination, innovation and creativity.

Externally Set Assignment – Controlled Assessment 40%

The controlled assessment, (Art Exam) is distributed in January of year 11, allowing sufficient preparatory study. The exam is sat end of March, 10 hours practical work, sat over a period of two days.

 

Programme of study outline KS5 AS/A2 LEVEL WJEC Art & Design & Photography

Building on the knowledge acquired from KS4, our aim at KS5 is to provide pupils with a broad and rich experience of Art & Design which further develops a multitude of practical skills, as well as continuing to raise self esteem and confidence, preparing them for the worlds of work.

A/S LEVEL – 40% Personal Investigation (160 marks)

A skills based approach is undertaken in the first term of year 12. A thematic approach is undertaken throughout the whole of ear 12. An extended, exploratory project/portfolio based on themes and subject matter which are personal and meaningful to the learner.

A 2 LEVEL 36% Personal Investigation / 24% Externally Set Assessment (160 marks)

A thematic study begins in year 13, along with the contextual element (1000 words minimum). The controlled assessment, (Art Exam) is distributed in February of year 13, allowing preparatory study. The exam is sat in May and includes 15 hours of practical work.
