Cylchlythyr / Newsletter

It’s a pleasure to introduce the 1st edition of the school newsletter. The newsletter is an opportunity to share news items with parents / guardians and the wider community. It’s also an opportunity to share the successes of our pupils with you. We hope to publish a newsletter on a fortnightly basis.

Mae’n bleser gyda ni gyflwyno rhifyn 1af o glychlythyr yr ysgol. Mae’r cylchlythyr yn gyfle i rieni a’r gymuned ehangach i gael blas o’r hyn sy’n digwydd yn yr ysgol, ac i ddathlu llwyddiannau ein disgyblion. Yr ydym yn gobeithio cyhoeddi’r cylchlythyr pob pythefnos.

Welsh National Skiing Finals 2019

Seven skiers from Ysgol Dyffryn Aman braved the tough conditions, high wind and driving rain at Llangrannog Ski Centre to take part in the Welsh National Skiing Finals. After a very strong performance in the West Wales regional round the teams were confident heading into the finals.

As always, competition was tough at the nationals with a large number of schools taking part, represented by over 150 racers. The YDA Girls’ Skiing Team did extremely well, finishing 5th overall and earning themselves a place, for the second year running, at the British Schools Ski Finals in November. Spearheaded by very fast runs from Shari Hagget, Year 8, who finished 12th over all categories and Ffion Jones, Year 12, (18th overall) and excellent support runs from Ellie Thomas and Keira Evans (both in year 9), the team were only a few seconds from a medal position across the 8 individual runs. Ffion also won the individual gold medal for the U18 unregistered category.

The boys team, led by ski captain Thom Wood, unfortunately didn’t make the cut off for qualification for the British finals amidst very tough competition. However, they produced some excellent individual performances with Thom Wood winning the gold medal in the U21 unregistered category and Steffan Rees-Millns the bronze medal in the same category. Jake Lewis also achieved a bronze medal in the unregistered U14 category.

Overall, an excellent effort in a tough competition and a particular well done to Thom Wood and Steffan Rees-Millns in year 13 who have now raced for the school for the final time. They have both been an integral part of the school ski team and have shown great skill, determination and energy in making the boys team one of the most successful in Wales over the past few years. Congratulations and thank-you to them both.

Techiquest Science Showcase

Throughout the day, 4 science sessions were given to years 7 and 8 by techniquest. The sessions were designed to engage pupils and to showcase different aspects and practicals that necessarily aren’t shown within their normal science lessons. Individual pupils were invited onto the stage to test scientific phenomena, such as static electricity, magnetism and pressure. Pupils demonstrated the effects of static electricity on their hair due to a balloon and a van der graaff generator, the strength of an electromagnet by playing tug of war against each other as well as sitting on a bed of nails to show that their weight was distributed over the combined surface area, resulting in a pain free seat. Pupils were amazed to see an everyday hoover lift a bowling ball and a miniature hot air balloon reach the ceiling of the hall using just the hot air from a hair dryer. To conclude the show, a ‘microscopic tour of the human body’ was given. A microscopic camera was used to magnify the hair of the visitor, including their arms, head and even up their nose, causing a mixture of extreme laughter, amazement and revolt from the pupils. Pupils spent the rest of the day discussing and sharing what they had seen during the showcase with their friends and teacher, confirming the success of the sessions.

Gyrfaoedd / Careers

Mae disgyblion Blwyddyn 12 wedi cychwyn eu Heriau Menter a Chyflogadwyedd. Yn yr adran hanfodol hon o Fagloriaeth Cymru (CBC) y bwriad yw creu cynnig a fydd yn adfywio Rhanbarth Dinas Bae Abertawe. Bydd y disgyblion yn cyflwyno eu syniadau i banel o feirniaid o’r gymuned fusnes leol.
Mae disgyblion ar draws yr ysgol yn cymryd rhan mewn amrywiaeth o weithgareddau gyrfaoedd. Mae YDA wedi cychwyn ar y rhaglen beilot gyda Gyrfa Cymru a’r ‘Gyfnewidfa Fusnes’. Mae’r adnodd ar-lein hwn yn caniatáu i’r ysgol nodi ystod enfawr o gyflogwyr a darparwyr hyfforddiant ar raddfa genedlaethol sy’n gallu gweithio gyda’r ysgol. Bydd hyn yn caniatáu i’r YDA gyfoethogi’r cwricwlwm a galluogi dysgwyr i ymgysylltu ymhellach â chyflogwyr.
Mynychodd Blwyddyn 10 ddigwyddiad ‘Skills Cymru’ Gyrfa Cymru sy’n cael ei gynnal bob blwyddyn ym Mharc y Scarlets, Llanelli. Cafodd y disgyblion y cyfle i gwrdd ag ystod enfawr o gyflogwyr a darparwyr addysg bellach. Roedd yn ddiwrnod ‘ymarferol’ gyda disgyblion yn cael y cyfle i roi cynnig ar wahanol yrfaoedd a chael cynnig! Fel bob amser, creodd ein disgyblion argraff wych gyda chyflogwyr yn rhannu adborth bositif gyda ni. Diolch yn fawr i Gyrfa Cymru a chyflogwyr am ddarparu profiad mor anhygoel i’n dysgwyr Blwyddyn 10.
Derbyniodd disgyblion Blwyddyn 11 gyflwyniad yn ystod gwasanaethau ar gyfleoedd gyrfaoedd, gan gynnwys siaradwyr gwadd gan Tata Steel, Cyfle a’r GIG. Mae’r rhaglen siaradwyr hon wedi’i chynllunio i ganiatáu i’n dysgwyr wneud dewisiadau gwybodus am lwybrau gyrfa ar adeg mor bwysig. Diolch yn fawr i gyflogwyr sydd wedi cymryd rhan a gweithio gyda’n disgyblion, yn ystod cyfnod arholiad prysur.
Fel rhan o ddiwrnod ABCh yr ysgol, derbyniodd Blwyddyn 11 amrywiaeth o weithdai ar yrfaoedd a byd gwaith. Bu Syniadau Mawr Cymru yn cymryd rhan ac yn siarad â dysgwyr Blwyddyn 11 ynglŷn â chyfryngau cymdeithasol a chyfleoedd cyflogaeth. Bu Ffitrwydd y Lluoedd yn gweithio gyda Blwyddyn 10 ar gyfleoedd menter a sut mae lles a ffitrwydd corfforol yn hanfodol ym myd gwaith.
Year 12 pupils have started their Enterprise and Employability Challenges. This essential component of the Welsh Baccalaureate (WBQ) and pupils are tasked with creating a proposal that will regenerate the Swansea Bay City Region. Pupils will present their ideas to a panel of judges from the local business community.
Pupils across the school are involved in a variety of careers activities.  YDA has embarked on pilot programme with Careers Wales and the ‘Business Exchange’. This online resource allows the school to identify a huge range of employers and training providers on a national scale that can work with the school.  This will allow YDA to enrich the curriculum and allow learners to further engage with employers.
Year 10 have attended Careers Wales ‘Skills Cymru’ event which takes place every year in Parc y Scarlets, Llanelli.  Pupils had the opportunity to meet a huge range of employers and further education providers. It was a ‘hands on’ day with pupils getting the opportunity to try different careers and have a go! As always our pupils created a fantastic impression with employers and we received some fantastic feedback. Many thanks to Careers Wales and employers for providing such an amazing experience for our Year 10 learners.
Year 11 pupils have been receiving presentation during assemblies regarding careers opportunities including guest speakers from Tata Steel, Cyfle and the NHS. This speaker programme is designed to allow our learners to make informed choices about career paths at such an important time. Many thanks to employers who have taken part and worked with our pupils, during a busy exam period.
As part of the school’s PSE day, Year 11 are experiencing a variety of workshops on careers and the world of work. Big Ideas Wales are involved and have been speaking to Year 11 learners regarding social media and employment opportunities. Forces Fitness are working with Year 10 on enterprise opportunities and how well being and physical fitness is essential in the world of work.
