Welsh Baccalaureate

During their time in Key Stage 4 and Key Stage 5, students at Ysgol Dyffryn Aman will complete the Welsh Baccalaureate qualification.
For Key Stage 4 (years 10 & 11) this means that as well as developing a range of skills and experiences, students will also receive an additional GCSE qualification. At sixth form the Advanced Welsh Baccalaureate Diploma is graded at the same level as other levels and is increasingly accepted by universities (including all Welsh universities) on the same terms as other A-Levels.
At both Key Stage 4 and Key Stage 5, the Welsh Baccalaureate is divided into:
  • the Skills Challenge Certificate; and
  • supporting qualifications including maths and English or Welsh GCSE and 3 additional GCSEs or, at Key Stage 5 a minimum of 2 additional A-Level Subjects
The Skills Challenge Certificate is designed to develop a range of skills in students such as literacy, numeracy, digital literacy, creativity & innovation, enterprise & employability, project management and personal effectiveness. This means that pupils will write reports, take part in community and sports activities, give presentations and develop communication skills by working in teams.
They will do this in the form of 4 specific challenges:
  • Enterprise & Employability Challenge – developing products for charities or ideas for improving the Swansea Bay area;
  • Community Challenge – working with pupils in younger years to promote healthy lifestyles or volunteering in the community;
  • Global Citizenship Challenge – understanding our place in the wider World as global citizens by looking at important World issues such as sustainability and child poverty; and
  • An Individual Project in which students can study a topic of interest and write a full research project.
